Handcrafted in Udaipur, the City of Lakes.

Udaipur, Rajasthan’s City of Lakes, is one of the few places in India where the old art of silver meenakari is still practised by hand. Meenakari came to India from Persia in the 16th century and was nurtured by Rajasthan’s royal courts. While Jaipur’s artisans became known for enamel on gold, Udaipur’s meenakars became masters of the harder art of enamelling silver.

The Pichola earrings are named after Udaipur’s famous lake, and their glowing cobalt blue enamel looks like its waters at dusk. Emerald-green leaves are hand-painted across the blue in a scattered vine pattern, outlined in fine white.

Making meenakari is slow, careful work. The design is first engraved into the silver. Then each colour is filled in by hand and fired one at a time, which gives the enamel its glassy, jewel-like shine.

The enamel sits in a teardrop of 925 sterling silver, framed by hand-curled silver spirals, and hangs from a round domed stud with a beaded rim. At 5 cm long, it makes a statement while still being easy to wear.

Wear them with a white kurta, an indigo or Ajrakh saree, or a denim shirt or black dress for an Indo-western look. They make a meaningful gift for anyone who loves real Indian craft.

Care: Enamel is fired glass, so it’s strong but can chip if dropped. Store the earrings in a soft pouch, separate from other jewellery. Wipe the silver gently with a soft dry cloth. Don’t use silver dip or harsh chemicals, and keep them away from perfume and water.

Note: Each piece is enamelled and fired by hand, so small differences in colour and brushwork are the mark of real meenakari.
